Tutorial/Training
Workshop
Outline
Abstract:
A number of studies in
health informatics have highlighted the crucial role of social
aspects surrounding health IT implementation and development in
organizations. While many have focused on desktop-based
infrastructures, the advent of wireless and mobile computing poses
new challenges to those in health organizations wishing to get the
best out of these new technologies. Possibly the biggest challenge
is on how to integrate Mobile Information and Communication
technology (MICT) into existing Clinical/Hospital information
systems.
This workshop aims to
explore general aspects of organizational behaviour as well as
leadership both strategic and team-focused that can help
decision-makers (CIOs, IT managers, clinical heads of department) to
foster health IT development in their organizations. The styles and
modes of leadership as well as strategies for decision making and
persuasion are very important elements of IT development in busy
healthcare settings. As an exercise level it will focus on emerging
aspects that result from looking more specifically at mobile
computing and mobilizing health information use and access.
Aims
of workshop:
1. Discuss aspects of leadership and organizational behaviour that
relate with fostering health IT projects in organizations.
2. Use an example: “Organizational use of Mobile
computing/mobilizing health information” as a way to train
participants to reflect on their organizational approach to health
IT.
3. Transfer knowledge and lessons learnt from the exercise to
broader health IT organizational challenges, namely those featuring
as conference themes.
Workshop/Special session/Tutorial outline: (topics covered)
Section I – Strategy in health IT and Mobile health IT
– Briefing on aspects of leadership and organizational behaviour
that relate with fostering health IT projects in organizations
– MICT in clinical settings, strategies organizations can assume.
Examples of different existing arrangements of MICT in health
organizations
– Discussion: why use mobile IT in health organizations, challenges
and opportunities.
Section II – Exercise “Organizational use of Mobile
computing/mobilizing health information”
- In pairs or alone, some participants would work on projects
identifying the current view and strategy of mobile computing usage
in their organizations, the majority would work on projects
detailing views or concrete examples/pilots where strategic use of
Mobile IT would be useful for:
1. Geriatrics and Eldercare at the house
2. e-Health & Telemedicine linking worlds
3. Epidemic & Pandemic Control and Management
4. Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy
Section III – Project presentation and discussion
- Discussion would try to distil ways in which mobile
computing/mobile health information links to many of the aspects of
this year’s conference themes, while at the same time focus on how
to move forward in each organization with the view to foster a
pro-active attitude regarding the incorporation of mobile technology
tailored to local needs.
