Tutorial/Training Workshop Outline

With an ageing population in many countries worldwide, it has become increasingly important to cater to the social, physical and medical needs of the older person. This workshop aims to help one understand the profile and needs of the elderly, with a special emphasis on enhancing his functional independence and quality of life even in old age, and improving the quality of geriatric care with technology. Examples of on-going research collaborations between a health care institution and a technology/ engineering based research organization are showcased.

The tutorial/training workshop will consist of the following sessions as follows:

1 Understanding the older person – Dr Jer-En Lee, Alexandra Hospital, Singapore

2 Using technology to enhance care for the older person – Dr Philip Yap, Alexandra Hospital, Singapore

3 Ongoing research collaborations between Alexandra Hospital and Institute for Infocomm Research in using technology to improve geriatric care – Mr Victor Foo Siang Fook, Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore

4 Technically challenging research issues in activity recognition and behavior understanding for dementia patients – Dr Jit Biswas, Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore

Abstract for Session 1: Understanding the older person

The growing population of elderly patients poses challenges to current systems of care worldwide. Older adults undergo many physiological changes, and the sociodemographic trend facing older adults will transform the face of aging. Understanding of the problems faced by the elderly, their diverse needs and the goals of care will be vital in formulating solutions towards aging successful.

About the Instructor

Dr. Jer-En Lee is trained in Geriatrics and has interests in acute geriatric care as well as rehabilitation of older adults. His exposure in various settings of care in the elderly from the community to acute care gives opportunities to exploit technology in these diverse settings. He sat in the electronic prescription system advisory committee in Alexandra Hospital. He works with both I2R and Astar, seeking opportunities to transform the current delivery of care in the elderly.

Abstract for Session 2: Using Technology to enhance care in the older person

The key to using technology in the care of the older person lies in understanding his needs with the overall goal of maintaining independence and enhancing quality of life. These needs can revolve around ensuring safety, facilitating day-to-day living, meeting physical and healthcare needs, as well as socio-psychological needs. The needs of caregivers of frail older persons must also be considered. Effective solutions can only be achieved by close collaboration between end-users, healthcare professionals and technology engineers. The talk will review some of the key developments in these areas and set the agenda for the future.

About the Instructor

Dr. Philip Yap, trained in internal medicine and a specialist in geriatric medicine, is a consultant geriatrician with the Dept of Geriatric Medicine in Alexandra Hospital. He is also an adjunct clinical lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He has a keen interest in both the biomedical and social aspects of ageing, especially in the areas of dementia, end of life care, support of caregivers of elderly patients and the use of technology in geriatric care. He presently sits on the committees of the Alzheimer’s Association of Singapore, the National Dementia Network at the Ministry of Health and the board of the Exelon Advisory Nucleus Team of Novartis.

Abstract for Session 3: Ongoing research collaborations between Alexandra Hospital and Institute for Infocomm Research in using technology to improve geriatric care

Agitated behavior is common in persons with dementia, and one of the challenges faced by doctors and caregivers is the detailed and continuous monitoring of such persons. With the use of modern sensor networking technology, and system directed observation, objective outcomes may be expected and with removal of the manpower requirement, evaluation can be continuous and need no longer be confined to clinical settings.
Our main emphasis in this portion of the Workshop will be on specific projects looking into technologies that support Geriatric care. We will begin with a feasibility study that we conducted in 2006, whereby we put together an observational system composed of multiple sensors of different modalities, in order to collect data from dementia patients in a hospital ward. Through this feasibility study (the SOAPD project), we gathered data to help in the automated detection of the onset of agitation in dementia patients, eventually increasing recognition success rates. This project paved the way to other projects in the area of sleep monitoring, continence management and tele-physiotherapy for elderly patients. We will briefly touch upon all these ongoing projects.

About the Instructor

Mr. Victor Foo Siang Fook is a Senior Research Engineer in Networking Protocols Department at the A*Star Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore. He received the Bachelor of Engineering degree and Master of Engineering degree from National University of Singapore in 1997 and 1999 respectively. He has published more than 20 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, and has worked on many prototypes and projects. In the past, he has written working draft for IETF standard group, worked on Singapore-One nationwide broadband network, developed an Automated Internet Monitoring System@AIMS ultimately licensed to a company and worked on a nationwide dynamic optical network research testbed in Singapore. His recent work involves developing and deploying smart sensor-based healthcare prototypes in hospital and nursing homes. His research interests include context awareness, mobile/wireless/optical/sensor networks and machine learning.

Abstract for Session 4: Technically challenging research issues in activity recognition and behavior understanding for dementia patients

We envision a future where software and algorithms will be tailored and personalized towards the recognition and assistance of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) of the elderly. This presentation will focus on some of the challenging aspects of using technology to aid early dementia patients in daily living activities. It has been observed that due to problems with cognition, the behavior of these patients is not always rational, especially in the carrying out of planned tasks. In our work we are investigating ways of providing memory and cognitive compensation for dementia patients through automated means of monitoring activities and inferring behavioral patterns from those activities.

About the Instructor

Dr Jit Biswas is a Senior Scientist in the Networking Protocols Department at the A*Star Institute of Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore, where he is working on Healthcare applications using Ambient Intelligence and Sensor Networking technologies. His areas of expertise include Healthcare Information Technology, Feature extraction and pattern classification in healthcare, Sensor networks Information Quality, Monitoring and surveillance using multi-modal sensor information fusion, Policy based management, network management, Quality of Service in Internet, Context Awareness, Smart homes and smart spaces. Dr Biswas has a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin, USA.
